Applications are now open for the Byzantine Archaeology, History and History of Art Course at the British School at Athens, an intensive two-week programme designed specifically for postgraduate students and early-career researchers working on the Byzantine world and related fields.

Taking place in Greece from 24 June to 5 July 2026, this course offers a rare opportunity to combine advanced academic teaching with sustained, on-site engagement with Byzantine material culture, monuments, landscapes, and archival resources.

Why this course is especially valuable for postgraduates:
-Research-driven training: The course foregrounds current methodologies and debates in Byzantine archaeology, history, and art history, with teaching closely aligned to postgraduate-level research interests.
-Field-based learning: Lectures and seminars are integrated with structured site and museum visits, including Athens, Dafni, Hosios Loukas, Skripou, Corinth, Thessaloniki, Mystras, and other major Byzantine centres.
-Primary resources: Participants receive access to the British School at Athens Archive and the Byzantine Research Fund collections, supporting dissertation and thesis development.
-Scholarly presentation skills: Assessment is based on an on-site oral presentation, allowing participants to refine research communication in a professional academic setting.
-Academic networking: Study alongside an international cohort of postgraduates and work closely with specialist staff and invited scholars.

The course is open to postgraduate students worldwide (MA, MPhil, PhD) in archaeology, history, art history, classics, and cognate disciplines. Applicants are selected on the basis of academic background, research interests, and the relevance of the course to their current or planned research.

Thanks to the generous support of the A.G. Leventis Foundation, the BSA can offer two full scholarships that will be awarded on the basis of academic merit and need. A limited number of smaller bursaries might also be available. International travel is not included.

Application deadline: 8 March 2026
