The history of Cyprus is divided into five periods. The first begins in the Neolithic IA period (7500-5250 BC) and ends in 330AD. The Byzantine period follows (330-1191AD) and ends with Guy de Lusignan settling on the island. The Frankish period under the Lusignans extends from 1192 to 1571 AD when Cyprus becomes part of the Ottoman Empire. The Turkish period ends in 1878 when the Ottomans hand the island over to the British. Events that took place between 1878 and 1978 are included by the author in the British period.
