The ancients thought that eating bulbs and snails were powerful aphrodisiacs. The first snail farm was organized in Rome in the year 50 BC. Eggs were thought of as having the same aphrodisiac effect while shellfish are even today rumoured to arouse desire. Out of lentils and vegetables, chickpeas and carrots stand out, while the ancient Greeks held a different opinion about lettuce which was held in great esteem as aphrodisiac food by the Egyptians.
