Images give eloquent expression to man’s eternal agony in the face of the inevitable decay brought on by death. There is a long tradition of images of the dead in the past, such as mummies with painted portrait faces or statues of the deceased.Photographs of the dead in the twentieth century belong to the same tradition, where the picture is printed indelibly on porcelain, surrounded by unfading plastic flowers.
