An international conference and a series of cultural events dedicated to lighthouses will take place from June 3 to June 7, in Piraeus.

The conference, title “Preservation of lighthouse heritage” is organized by the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities, in association with the Hellenic Navy Lighthouse Service and under the auspices of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. The conference is hosted by the Hellenic Maritime Museum and the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation.

Parallel to the conference, the Laskaridis Foundation is presenting an exhibition on “European Lighthouses: From the Past to the Future”, organized by the Laboratory of Building Materials of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, as part of the EC-PHAROS Project (2004-2007). The exhibition was first shown in 2007, in Thessaloniki.

The exhibition aims to show the lighthouses as historical, topographic, architectural and cultural landmarks, as a romantic symbol that inspires the lonely visitor. Through the various exhibits the visitor gets acquainted with the lighthouse as an architectural structure, its value and the problems of preservation and conservation of these historic buildings.
