Further investigations about the archaeological finds which have recently been discovered in the Alikanas Bay on the island of Zakynthos are expected to start in the coming autumn by a team of underwater archaeologists.
The finds are extremely significant, due to the lack of archaeological data regarding many and important historical periods of the Ionian islands, particularly those connected to the Homeric and post-Homeric time.
A month ago, an Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities team found a new underwater site, with extensive sunken architectural remains off the shore of Zakynthos, near the area of Alikanas. Preliminary observations led to the result that the remains belong to a large ancient public building, probably related to the ancient city’s port.
