Recipes for potions and charms in papyri

There are three kinds of magic potions; love philtres, healing potions and other. Love potions serve to conquer the loved one, to bring the object of desire back, to stand in the way of two lovers meeting, to create hate where once there was love, and last to punish the unfaithful party. Healing potions serve to cure swellings, broken bones, the scorpion’s bite, headaches, possession by an evil spirit, coughs, a temperature, hardening of the breasts, dropping of the vagina, and attainment of the power of becoming invisible. Under “other philtres” are included potions to bring about a horse’s winning a race, the gaining of material wealth, the gaining of confidential information at night, the riding of a crocodile, the sending of a dream or the catching of a thief.
