Per Terram, Per Mare. Production and Transport of Roman Amphorae in the Eastern Mediterranean
An international conference organized by the Roman Amphorae from Cyprus (ROMACY) project and the Maritime Archaeology Research (M.A.RE) Lab Archaeological Research Unit, Department of History and Archaeology, University of Cyprus. The conference will take place in Nicosia, Cyprus, on 12-15 April 2013.
The aim of the conference is to provide an in-depth and multi-faceted approach to amphora studies and to produce a synthesis of the data obtained from recent research in the eastern Mediterranean. The intention is to bring together specialists from various fields in order to exchange ideas and communicate results on issues relating to the nature of amphora production and trade. The topics that will be addressed range from typology, archaeometry and seaborne trade to statistical analysis and theoretical perspectives.
The conference will comprise oral presentations and workshops, including the demonstration of manufacturing techniques in a pottery workshop, the examination of the finds from an amphora kiln-site and the inspection of thin-sections of eastern amphorae identified in Cyprus. The objective is to achieve a practical understanding of the issues that will be examined during the sessions and to stimulate further discussion. The programme will include excursions to a number of archaeological sites.
English will be the official language of the conference.
The Organizing Committee (Prof. D. Michaelides, Dr. S. Demesticha, Dr. V. Kassianidou, Dr. A. Kaldeli) invites specialists and researchers to submit titles and abstracts (300 words maximum) for a presentation related to one of the following broad themes:
-Amphora typology
-Petrography and geochemical properties
-Modes of production
-Seaborne trade
-Shipwrecks
-Amphora Contents and Capacities
All abstracts must be written in English and must be submitted as a Microsoft Word or PDF document.

Conference proceedings will be published by 2014. All speakers are therefore kindly requested to provide the first draft of their papers no later than 15 March 2013.
