At the launch of its new MA in October 2014 the Open University, UK offers two fully funded MA scholarships made possible through the generosity of Baron Lorne Thyssen-Bornemisza. The scholarships will provide the full fees for two year part-time MA studentships in Classical Studies at the Open University. Details of the MA modules are available online.

The scholarships are open to graduates of any university holding a high 2:1 Bachelor’s degree or its equivalent, ideally, but not necessarily in Classics, Classical Studies, Ancient History or a related subject. The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic merit, financial hardship and a demonstrable need for the qualification such as to facilitate professional development, e.g. a change in career, specialization for teachers, preparation for study at MPhil/PhD level, etc. Full details of the MA programme and general entry requirements may be found online, these include living in the European Union or in a country in which the Open University allows registration.

Interested applicants should complete the application form which includes a section for a personal statement. This section should be used to explain their personal circumstances and why he/she wants to study for an MA in Classical Studies at the Open University. It should make clear the basis of his/her financial need for support to study for an MA. Interested applicants should also send:

-a separate curriculum vitae (CV) of no more than two pages;

-a copy of his/her latest degree certificate;

-a transcript of his/her degree that makes clear the level of his/her academic achievement;

-the name of an academic referee who would be prepared to support his/her application if he/she is shortlisted.

The scholarships will not be awarded to students receiving full funding from the AHRC or other bodies. It is not necessary to register for the MA degree before making this application. The awards will be made at the discretion of the Department of Classical Studies and there can be no appeals against its decision.

The Open University promotes diversity in education and will welcome applications from all sections of the community. For applications in an alternative format please contact: [email protected].
