On February 1, 2015 the exhibition One God – Descendants of Abraham on the Nile. Jews, Christians and Muslims in Egypt from the Romans to the Fatimids opens at the Bode-Museum in Berlin.
The three great world religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, coexisted in Egypt for the longest period of time – from late antiquity to the Middle Ages. For the first time this exhibition will highlight the similarities and differences of the three world religions, the various facets of religious life and every day coexistence of the three religious communities from the Roman period to the end of the reign of the Fatimids in the 12th c.
The exhibition will feature 250 archaeological and religious artefacts from the collections of the Staatliche Museen and the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, as well as the British Museum and the Louvre. The exhibits illustrate the rich cultural heritage of the three monotheistic religions: sacred texts, architectural sculptures and liturgical equipment of the Egyptian places of worship, and numerous objects and documents of everyday life. Also featured will be selected manuscripts of the Cairo Geniza.
