The 46th Annual Course for Undergraduates of the British School at Athens, entitled “The Archaeology and Topography of Ancient Greece” will take place on 26th August – 15th September 2018.
The BSA Summer School provides a unique opportunity for students from UK and Irish Universities to discover and explore the landscape and archaeological sites of Ancient Greece, and to relate material culture to the literature and history of Ancient Greece in its physical setting. This three week intensive course covers Prehistoric, Early Iron Age, Classical, Roman, and Byzantine Greece, with specialist lectures and site tours by leading experts, and opportunities to gain first-hand experience of objects and monuments not accessible to the individual traveller.
Highlights include:
-A tour of the interior of the Parthenon and the Restoration Project
-A tour of the interior of the temple of Apollo at Bassai
-The Bronze Age Palaces of Mycenae, Tiryns and Pylos
-Sanctuaries from the rural to the Pan-Hellenic
-Topographies of Classical, Hellenistic and Roman city-states
-Introductions to key archaeological skills: architecture, pottery, and the archaeological sciences at the Fitch Laboratory
-Tours of 50 archaeological sites and museums throughout Greece by leading scholars and excavators, and guest lectures on historical and thematic subjects
Students will have access to the outstanding research facilities of the BSA, and will be introduced to the archaeological, archival, and scientific work of the School. The course is devoted to teaching on sites and in museums in Athens, Attica, Central Greece, and the Peloponnese. Course participants will be accommodated at the BSA and in hotels when on excursions. It is also possible to take the course as a credit module at many UK universities.
The course fee of £860 includes accommodation, entrance charges to sites and museums, transport within Greece, half-board, and associate membership of the BSA for one year. For those meals not provided and for incidental expenses, students should allow not less than £400. Travel to and from Greece is the sole responsibility of the course participants, who are also required to provide their own private travel insurance. The BSA administers a number of bursaries which provide awards of up to £450 to assist students who would otherwise be prevented from participating.
A provisional course itinerary, further information, and an application form can be found at the BSA web site (www.bsa.ac.uk). Completed application forms should be emailed to the Assistant Director, Dr. Chryssanthi Papadopoulou ([email protected]) to arrive no later than March 31st 2018.
