The M.A. in Early Christian Studies at Notre Dame prepares
students for doctoral studies in all aspects of early Christian
and late ancient studies. The program is jointly administered
by the Departments of Theology and Classics and can draw
on Notre Dame’s world-class faculty in these disciplines, as
well as history, archaeology, art history, philosophy, political
science and medieval studies. The program has an excellent
placement record: 85% of graduates have successfully
applied to major PhD programs in theology, classics and
history.

The ECS program is highly selective; the small cohort size
guarantees intensive individual advising. The curriculum
combines academic rigor with flexibility. In cooperation
with their adviser, students develop their own scholarly
focus and work on building their academic career. All
students pursue advanced studies in two ancient languages
(Latin, Greek, Syriac, Hebrew) as well as courses in theology
and liturgy, history and religion.

The program provides a tuition scholarship and a small
stipend for each student, as well as opportunities for paid
teaching and research assistantships and independent
teaching.
