The Greek Revolution of 1821 and its Scottish and Classical Connections

The Greek Revolution of 1821 and its Scottish and Classical Connections is the subject of the new Postdoctoral (Curatorial) Fellowship position of the University of Edinburgh’s School of History, Classics and Archaeology. The position is supported by the A. G. Leventis Foundation, in connection with the 12th A. G. Leventis Conference in Hellenic Studies at Edinburgh in 2021.

“The Greek Revolution…” as a PostDoc fellowship position

The University welcomes the application to the position of scholars with a research interest in Scottish Philhellenism of the early nineteenth century, Scottish-Greek connections, and/or the Late Enlightenment in Scotland. Additional expertise or interest in Greek or Eastern Mediterranean history of the early nineteenth century will constitute an advantage.

The appointee will play the leading role in organizing, and developing the narrative for, an exhibition in the University of Edinburgh that commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Greek Revolution and is provisionally entitled ‘Edina/Athena – 1821/2021: The Greek Revolution and Edinburgh as the “Modern Athens”.

In addition to identifying suitable exhibits from collections within and without Edinburgh, the appointee’s main task will be to communicate the fascinating story these exhibits tell to an academic and lay audience via various media.

Furthermore, the postholder will have access to curatorial assistance and academic advice from within and without the University. Experience in – or interest in, and the ability and willingness to learn very fast – exhibition organization is an asset.

Job details

This is a temporary part-time (17.5hrs per week) and is available for a fixed-term period from August 2020, or as soon as possible thereafter until 31st December 2021. 

The salary is £33,797 – £40,322, per annum, pro-rata.
