The call for papers for the 3rd International Symposium on Animals in Ancient Egypt, the Middle Nile and their hinterlands (ISAAE 3) to be held 15th-17th June 2022 at the University of Naples “L’Orientale”, is now open. The Symposium is organized in partnership with the American University in Cairo (S. Ikram) and the Archéologie et Histoire de la Méditerranée et de l’Egypte Ancienne – Labex Archimede in Montpellier (S. Porcier).

The symposium aims to provide a thorough insight into the role of animals in Ancient Egyptian and Nubian societies, creating a fruitful scientific dialogue among the scholars from different disciplines – such as Egyptology, archaeozoology, restoration, Digital Humanities, ceramology, philology, history of art, science, economy, history of religion and Museology – who are working on this topic.

Participants are asked to focus on the following aspects:

-animals in art, craft and texts

-animal cults and religion

-material culture

-archaeology and current fieldwork

-scientific analysis and archaeozoology

-animal impact on human society and economy

-museology (including discussions on the ethics of the display of animal remains, exhibitions, restoration and conservation).

Participants may orient their papers towards any period of the history of the region, from the 5th millennium BCE to the 7th century CE.

Abstracts for a 20-minute presentation in English should be submitted by 5 pm (CET) on 15th January 2022 to [email protected]. They should not exceed 150 words. A limited number of poster contributions will be accepted. Abstracts not exceeding 150 words are to be submitted to [email protected] by 5 pm (CET) on 15th January 2022, as well. A limited number of participants will be able to follow the conference through our *zoom platform*. Please send a formal request to [email protected] by 5 pm (CET) on 15th January 2022.

Abstracts will be considered by a panel made up of representatives from the scientific committee (S. Ikram, A. Manzo, C. Oliva, R. Pirelli, S. Porcier, M. D. Pubblico) and the organizing committee (M.D. Pubblico S. Mainieri, I. Incordino, A. C. Salsano) confirmation will be mailed by 31st January 2022. Conference registration will open on 25th February 2022. More information about inscription fee, travel and accommodation will be provided by 15th January 2022.
