On Friday, September 30, 2022 the National Archaeological Museum (EAM) celebrated the anniversary of a great discovery – the 200th anniversary of the decipherment of the hieroglyphs.

On September 14, 1822, the young scholar Jean-François Champollion solved the mystery of the hieroglyphs, the sacred writing of the ancient Egyptians. A few days later, on September 27, he presented his results to the Royal Academy of Inscriptions and Letters in Paris and officially opened the way for the science of modern Egyptology.

As part of the celebrations taking place around the world for the 200th anniversary of this sensational discovery, the National Archaeological Museum welcomed its visitors in hall 41 of the Egyptian Collection with a presentation of “Champollion and the mystery of the hieroglyphs”.

The event took place on Friday 30 September 2022.
