The Department of Cultural Heritage at the University of Bologna, campus of Ravenna, seeks to appoint one 24-month PostDoctoral Researcher (Assegno di Ricerca, approx. € 22,000/year) working on “Performance of power and audience response in ancient Greece”, as part of the Research Unit of Ravenna of the PRIN 2022 PNRR project “Performing power: political communication, consensus and audience in the ancient cities”, grant number J53D23017640001.
The Researcher will work under the supervision of Dr Matteo Zaccarini and within the broader framework of the PRIN, which aims to investigate, in a comparative perspective, the forms and ways of ancient political communication through a number of meaningful case studies: rhetorical strategies, individual-group dynamics, role of emotions, deliberative and decision-making processes, leadership and negotiation.
The Researcher will design and carry out their own project, working on ancient Greece in a broad sense, up to and including the Imperial period. Possible areas of research are leadership and speaker-audience interactions; non-verbal expressions of power and command; the ways of response by the general audience and/or specific social groups; challenge and contestation (violent or non-violent) of power; satire and criticism of authority; further relevant topics are possible, and applicants are invited to propose their own project within the PRIN framework. The Researcher’s project will contribute to understanding how power is established, exercised, received, supported, challenged, mocked, etc., through the study of documents and literary texts concerning the civil, political, and/or military spheres, in a period between the 5th century BCE and the 2nd century CE. The Researcher will also contribute to the PRIN activities (organisation of workshops and conferences, outreach activities, etc.).
Remote working is possible to a certain extent.
