Classics and Ancient History at the University of Exeter invites expressions of interest from eligible candidates to be considered for support in an application to the British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowships scheme, for fellowships starting in 2025. The fellowships provide support for a three-year project, working with a mentor and taking a full part in the department’s vibrant research culture. We encourage you to make contact with a potential mentor to discuss your ideas well in advance of the deadline; information about the research of staff can be found at https://cahrt.exeter.ac.uk/classics/people/academic/.

Where relevant, applicants should consider if their project aligns with one of our research centres, focused on Classical reception, Hellenistic studies, Ancient Connectivity, and Ancient Science and Technology: https://cahrt.exeter.ac.uk/research/. Further expertise in digital humanities is provided by Exeter’s Digital Humanities lab, which has a significant Classics leadership and presence, and may enhance projects using digital methods or data: https://humanities.exeter.ac.uk/research/digital/. Affiliating with one of these groupings is not essential but may help establish a project’s fit with Exeter.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences will conduct an internal sift of candidates to decide which applications to support. You therefore need to submit an expression of interest by 5th July 2024, sending this as an email attachment to the Director of Research, Martin Pitts ([email protected]). Applicants will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible.

An expression of interest should include: a) a short statement on fit with the Department, including the proposed mentor; b) a 150-word abstract; c) a concise outline of the proposed research programme/plan of action (max. 800 words); d) a summary of the intended outputs; and e) a CV.
