The ancient road connecting Athens to Eleusis was named Hiera Odos, “the Sacred Way”, because the procession of the Eleusinian Mysteries – celebrated in honour of Demeter and Persephone – followed its route. Along the Hiera Hodos there was a multitude of sanctuaries, various monuments and graves, of which very few have survived.
