The shadow theatre is an eastern invention that was brought to Greece from Turkey, along with the Turkish Karagiozis who became Greek. The Greek Karagiozis is less foul mouthed than his Turkish predecessor and his long arm takes the place of the phallus of the Turk. Performances of the shadow theatre in Greece are embellished with references to the times in which they are performed, and become patently Greek. Apart from the Karagiozis himself who is the main character, other personages of the shadow theatre are the Barbagiorgos, the Hadziavatis, sior Dionysios, the Stavrakas, the Morfonios, the Vizier, the Bey, Karagiosis ‘ wife kyra-Aglaitsa, and his famous son, the son of shadows Kollitiri.
