The belief that engravings in old travel books depict true likenesses of Greek scenery, dress and people can lead to mistaken conclusions. The later colouring of costume plates can mislead, the representation of ancient monuments can be fanciful as are many portraits. Even captions under engravings cannot always be trusted.
