A survey of the prehistoric period of the island of Skyros proves its homogeneous cultural continuity from the early Neolithic phase to the dawn of the historic era. Archaeological evidence pinpoints two periods of special prosperity, those of the Early Bronze age and Late Bronze Age respectively, since the existing gaps in research do not allow a more precise evaluation of the island ‘s entire cultural evolution. As the excavation at Palamari progresses, the real contribution of Skyros to the Aegean civilization will be better appreciated and knowledge of the island ‘s prehistory will greatly help clarify the entire prehistory of the Aegean.
