PhD Scholarship in Classics

University of Leeds

The Department of Classics at the University of Leeds is pleased to offer a doctoral scholarship for entry 2013 covering full tuition fees at the Home/EU rate and a maintenance award of £5,000, for a maximum of three years. The award holder will also be eligible to apply for a Classics Teaching Assistantship, at the rate of £1,000-£3,000 per annum, depending on the level of teaching. Further small grants are also available to all doctoral students in the Department to support research and professional development.

Outstanding applicants are sought, with innovative and creative projects and a commitment to communicating the results of their research to a public audience. While the award is available for study in any of the Department’s research areas, preference may be given to projects relating to our three main research strands: Literatures and Philosophies; Community and Identity; and Classics Across Media.

In addition, since 2014 marks both the bimillennium of the death of Augustus and the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, there may be an advantage this year for candidates with proposals related specifically to ongoing major projects at Leeds on receptions of Augustus (Dr Penelope Goodman) or classical influences in commemorations of WWI heroism (Dr Elizabeth Pender). The award is for study beginning September 2013.

The closing date for applications is: Monday July 1st 2013.

Applicants may be invited for interview.

Candidates should first apply for acceptance onto the Classics PhD programme using the standard University of Leeds online application system and uploading two academic references here. Candidates should then send a writing sample of c. 3-5,000 words direct to Dr Elizabeth Pender’s email.

Those already holding PhD offers from Classics for 2013-14 will automatically be considered for the award on the basis of their online application but will need to send on their writing sample by the closing date.
