The Discipline of Classics at the University of Galway invites expressions of interest from prospective candidates who wish to apply for Research Ireland funding to pursue doctoral or post-doctoral research aligned with its core research specialisms.

Research Ireland Funding Opportunities

The 2026 Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship covers programme fees, a stipend of €25,000 for four years, and direct research expenses of €3,250 per annum.

The 2026 Government of Ireland Postdoctoral Fellowship provides a salary of €47,273 in the first year and €47,880 in the second year, employer’s PRSI contribution, and eligible direct research expenses of €5,000 per annum.

Cross-cultural Encounters: identity and ethnicity; archaeology of pre- and early Roman Italy; multilingualism and code-switching; Latin and vernacular languages; the heroic tradition.

The Latin Tradition (Antiquity to the Middle Ages): manuscript transmission; Hiberno-Latin; Latin education; scientific texts; glosses, glossaries, and scholia.

Digital Humanities: digital editions, catalogues, and databases.
