Applications are invited for the above permanent whole-time post in the Department of Classics within the College of Arts, Celtic Studies & Social Sciences. This is an opportunity to join one of Ireland’s leading universities and an academic unit with a long record of teaching and research in Classics. Applicants should have a specialist interest in Latin literature of the Roman Imperial or Late Antique periods as well as a strong competence and teaching ability in Latin. The successful applicant will be required to deliver foundation and advanced teaching on aspects of Roman literature, with an emphasis on Roman poetry, both in translation and in the original Latin. An ability to teach Greek is desirable, but not essential. S/he may also be required to teach in the highly successful annual International Summer School in Greek and Latin, and in other areas of classical culture or history according to changing departmental needs.

Candidates must hold a doctoral qualification in Classics from a recognised University at the time of application. The holder of this post will be expected to promote student research at masters and doctoral level on different aspects of Roman literature. S/he will also be required to contribute to the academic administration of the department and College, and to engage with external bodies in areas relating to Classics.

Appointment may be made on the Lectureship Salary Scale (new entrants 2011):  €31,821 – €51,270/€62,353 – €76,942.
