The University of Cyprus (UCY) announces to have received another significant donation, the private collection of antiquities belonging to the late former president Glafcos Clerides.
The invaluable collection—which consists of 51 artefacts dating from the Early, Middle and Late Bronze Ages, and from the Iron Age—has been housed in the building of the UCY Archaeological Research Unit and is already on exhibition. It is a welcome contribution to society and cultural heritage for future generations and was a huge vote of confidence in the university itself especially when such collections come from people who charted the course of history in Cyprus.
The signing ceremony of the Agreement for the donation took place on Wednesday, February 8th 2017, at the UCY Campus.
Commenting on the donation, Katy Clerides, the daughter of the late former president who made humbly this charitable move, said that she felt UCY to be the perfect home for the collection and a spot where the public could enjoy them.
“We are honored to have been donated another invaluable collection, ensuring the preservation of our historic and cultural heritage for future generations to discover”, stated UCY Rector, Professor Constantinos Christofides.
“This is a very significant addition to our set of collections, joining the other treasures that have found a home in UCY.” “We thank Ms Clerides for this donation and the trust placed in us, and that is for us particularly important as it links an important Cypriot personality, Glafcos Clerides, with the University of Cyprus,” said the director of the Archaeological Research Department, Professor Vassiliki Kassianidou. “The collection of her father has found a home where it will be exhibited, and used for educational purposes.”
