The exhibition “Nikos Hadjikyriakos-Ghika: Painting for Books” opens today at the Benaki Museum. It will last through July 21, 2018.

Nikos Hadjikyriakos–Ghika created illustrations that accompanied texts from 1937 until 1992. He designed many book covers and frontispieces and he illustrated mainly works of poetry.

Many of his works decorated the cover or the frontispiece of literary magazines, such as Nea Estia, Morfes and Aixoni. Ghika illustrated fully the Poems by Kavafi, The Odyseyby Kazantzakis, Daphnis and Chloe by Longus and Amorgos by Nikos Gatsos. Meanwhile, he created many individual covers and frontispieces for books and poetic collections by Odysseus Elytis, Lito Katakouzenos, Margarita Liberaki and others.

Τhe exhibition, combining painting and literature, offers to the public a great chance to admire older publications and to discover Ghika’s art of illustration.

The exhibition is curated by Ioanna Moraiti.
