The Gennadius Library presents the exhibition “Francesco Morosin and his Legacy on Crete, Athens and the Morea”. The opening is today, Tuedsay, November 19, 2019, at 7.00 p.m. The exhibition will run through February 29, 2020.
The year 2019 marks 400 years from the birth of Francesco Morosini (26 February 1619 – 16 January 1694) who was the Doge of Venice from 1688 to 1694; and 350 years from the end of the Siege of Candia (1669).
The Gennadius Library has a wealth of materials that will be exhibited to showcase several important events in the military and administrative career of Francesco Morosini: the siege of Candia, the bombardment of the Parthenon in 1687, and the second Venetian dominion of the Peloponnese (1687-1715).
These materials range from maps, city-views, topographical and architectural drawings, reports, manuscripts, books, and engravings.
Loans from the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, the Acropolis Restoration Service, the Benaki Museum, the Numismatic Museum and private collections will enhance the exhibition.
Curators of the exhibition are Maria Georgopoulou, Director of the Gennadius Library, and Alexis Malliaris, Archivist of the ASCSA.
A two-day international conference in January 23-24, 2020 will explore several issues related to the Greek legacy of Francesco Morosini.
The exhibition will be open to the public according to the following schedule:

Wednesday: 11:00-16:00
Saturday: 11:00 – 15:00
