The ERC-funded project MIGMAG: Migration and the Making of the Ancient Greek World is seeking to recruit: two postdoctoral researchers and two PhD students.

MIGMAG s a 5-year project based at the Institute for Classical Archaeology at the University of Vienna, funded by an ERC Consolidator Grant, reporting to the Principal Investigator Professor Naoíse Mac Sweeney. The project combines archaeological and textual data to investigate human mobility in the Mediterranean during the period c. 1200-550 BCE.

PhD Positions x2

We are looking for two outstanding candidates who are interested in pursuing graduate-level research in the field of ancient Greek history and archaeology. The positions will be funded for three years. Successful candidates will conduct doctoral research on either the Greek mainland or the central Mediterranean

Postdoctoral Researcher 1: Central Mediterranean

This researcher will focus on human mobility in the central Mediterranean, in particular in the MIGMAG case-study regions of Calabria and Sardinia. They will contribute primarily to Work Package 2 (Archaeologies of Mobility), but also to Work Package 3 (Myths of Migration) of the project. The position is fixed term for a period of 3.5 years.

Postdoctoral Researcher 2: Environmental Archaeology

This researcher will assess environmental evidence for landscape use, climate, and agricultural strategies across all five of the MIGMAG case-study regions. They will contribute primarily to Work Package 2 (Archaeologies of Mobility). The position is fixed term for a period of 2 years.

All salaries will be graded in accordance with the with the Collective Bargaining Agreement for staff at the University of Vienna. Postdoctoral researchers will fall within the scale of ‘Job Group B1: Project Staff’ ( The standard salary in this grade for 2020 is €54,453 p.a.
