As part of its various initiatives for strengthening communication channels between its museums and the general public, the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ioannina continues in 2022 its successful practice of the digital exhibition “Details” with monthly posts on its Facebook page.

For February 2022, archaeologist Georgios Georgoulas selects from the collections of the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina and comments on one of the ways in which science today traces the origin of the pilgrims who came to the Dodona oracle and submitted their prayers to its gods engraved on small lead plates. The “key” to the search for the pilgrims’ origin is offered in this case by an unusual letter of the alphabet from an area outside Epirus. The 5th century BC lead plate bearing a question is exhibited in Hall 6 with finds from the sanctuary of Dodona.

Historical information about one of the rulers of Ioannina deduced from a fragmentarily preserved but purposely hammered stone inscription of the second half of the 14th c. from the Castle of Ioannina has been selected and commented on by archaeologist Polyxeni Dimitrakopoulou. The inscription is exhibited in the Hall on the Byzantine Era of the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina.

The Ephorate of Antiquities of Ioannina invites digital visitors to “browse” the “Details” of February 2022 but also of the previous months that are in the relevant “Album” (Digital Exhibition – Event “Leptomeries/Details”) and to participate in the activity “I have a question”, which is an integral part of it. Specifically, those interested can ask questions regarding the exhibits and discover a detail of their “history” at the email address leptomeries 100 @ gmail.com and archaeologists will promptly respond with more information.

The digital exhibition and communication activity is coordinated by Barbara N. Papadopoulou, Dr of Archaeology and Deputy Head of the Ephorate of Antiquities of Ioannina, and curated by archaeologists Eleni Kotzambopoulou and Dimitra Papaioannou and photographer Panagiotis Tsingoulis.
