The NACGLE IV Programme Committee would like to remind you all of the approaching (extended) deadline for the submission of Poster Proposals. They are due on Monday 27 November.

The Fourth North American Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (NACGLE IV) “Epigraphy and Public Life in the Graeco-Roman World” will take place in the University of Chicago, on January 8-9, 2024.

Call for Posters: deadline extended

The Fourth North American Congress of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (NACGLE IV) will be held at the University of Chicago on January 8-9, 2024, under the aegis of the American Society of Greek and Latin Epigraphy (ASGLE), and with support from the University of Chicago.

The congress will take place at the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures (ISAC, formerly the Oriental Institute) on the campus of the University of Chicago and will be held immediately following the Annual Meeting of the Archaeological Institute of America and the Society for Classical Studies in Chicago (January 4-7, 2024). It will include thematic panels on a variety of topics, a poster session and a keynote lecture given by Professor Alain Bresson (Chicago/Bordeaux) followed by a reception. We are hoping to organize a visit to the ISAC Museum during the congress. Please note that the conference will be in-person and on-site in Chicago only. Remote participation will not be possible.

A preliminary version of the programme is now available at This programme will be enhanced by a series of Posters that discuss the contribution of epigraphy to our understanding of the political, civic, economic and social life and institutions of the Greek and Roman world from the archaic period through late antiquity. Please note we cannot accept proposals for posters from those whose papers have already been accepted for oral delivery at the conference.

Posters may be devoted to the importance of epigraphy for our understanding of any of the following topics: civic, political and legal activity; economic production and exchange; social hierarchies and social mobility; rural communities and agrarian life; military communities. Posters devoted to discussions of new inscriptions and new techniques for reading epigraphic texts and analyzing inscriptions in bulk will also be welcome.

The congress Organizing Committee is pleased to invite individual proposals for posters. These should be between 350 and 500 words (bibliography excluded) and be anonymous. Please submit your proposal by email attachment in PDF or Word document format by Monday 27 November 2023 to [email protected]. Please include the words “Naggle IV Poster” in the subject line of the email. Proposals will be reviewed anonymously by members of the congress Organizing Committee, and the results of the review process will be made known to potential participants soon thereafter. Please note that those whose posters are accepted will have to make their own arrangements for printing and bringing their posters to Chicago. (There is a FedEx Office Print shop at 1315 E 57th St., within easy walking distance of the conference location at the ISAC and the conference hotel, The Sophy, 1411 East 53rd St..)

To submit a proposal for a poster, it is not necessary to be a current member of ASGLE, but we hope that all those whose posters are accepted for presentation in Chicago will join ASGLE, if they are not already members.
