Applications are awaited for a postdoctoral fellowship co-hosted by the Universities of Stellenbosch and the Western Cape, and funded by the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO) and the National Research Foundation (NRF, South Africa). Funding has been obtained for a two year fellowship.

Candidates with a completed PhD specialising in the literature, history, society and economy of Roman imperial times will be preferred, but strong candidates in other areas of the Greco-Roman world will also be considered.

The successful candidate should be willing to assist in the successful completion of the collaborative project (Ghent, Stellenbosch, UWC) entitled ‘Responsive Governance and Population Well-being in Late Antiquity’. Duties include publication, conference organisation, editorial work,  and other research-related duties connected to the project.

The post-doctoral fellowship package includes a monthly stipend that covers living expenses in South Africa, departmental workspace and access to research facilities and resources of the respective universities in South Africa.

Commencement date: 1 January 2025 or the earliest opportune date
