The Department of Classics at the University of Notre Dame offers fully funded two-year M.A. programs in Classics. The program covers the languages, literature, history, archaeology, and culture of the Greco-Roman world. Its primary aim is to prepare students for doctoral study in these or related areas. Many of our alumni have gone on to pursue Ph.D. programs at institutions such as Yale, Princeton, Oxford, Penn, and Columbia.

This year, the program introduces three main innovations:

1) Language Prerequisites:
We will admit students who have completed at least one advanced course (beyond the intermediate level) in either Greek or Latin (Language 1) prior to the start of the program. For the other language (Language 2), we are open to admitting students who have completed only the beginning sequence and still need to take the intermediate level. Students with no prior exposure to Language 2 may be admitted conditionally, under the following terms: they must complete either Latin I and II or Greek I and II in our summer courses before starting the program in the fall.

2) Emphasis on Classical Archaeology and Material Culture:
Students interested in classical archaeology and material culture can take up to six courses in Greek or Roman history, archaeology, and material culture.

3) GRE Optional:
The GRE is no longer required.

The deadline for applications is January 15.
