The Faculty of Classics is seeking to appoint a part-time (0.8 FTE) researcher for 4 years from 1 October 2014.
Position: The Mica and Ahmet Ertegun Aphrodisias Senior Researcher, Faculty of Classics, Ioannou Centre for Classical and Byzantine Studies, 66 St Giles, Oxford, Grade 6: £26,527 – £31,644 p.a.
Reporting to Professor RRR Smith, in his role as Director of Excavations at Aphrodisias, the Researcher will assist in the study and publication of material from the site. The postholder will be a member of the Aphrodisias research team with responsibility for the provision of research support and coordination of material for publication. The postholder will provide advice and guidance to research students where appropriate; find and check measurements of objects in the Aphrodisias Museum depots (Geyre, Turkey) and check inventory numbers and find-spots in old excavation notebooks and assess fragments and possible joins in the depots at Aphrodisias; contribute to discussions and share research findings with colleagues in partner institutions, and research groups; and liaise with project photographers, architects, and draughtspersons for illustrations as well as with Aphrodisias Archive in New York, locating relevant negatives, notebooks, and inventories.
The successful candidate will hold a doctorate in classical archaeology in a relevant specialist discipline, together with relevant experience; possess sufficient specialist knowledge in the discipline to work within established research and publication programmes; be able to manage own research and administrative activities; and have excellent communication skills, including the ability to write text that can be published, present data at conferences, and represent the research group at meetings.
