Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) in Munich, Germany, is one of Europe’s leading universities and offers a more than 500-year tradition of research and teaching. The ERC Consolidator Grant DiverseNile of Julia Budka (starting date: April 2020) is funded by the European Research Council (ERC) under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme (grant agreement No. 865463).

The ERC project invites applications for the following position:

1 Postdoctoral Position, Salary grade 13 TV-L / 100%

This researcher position is available from 1 April/1 May 2022 for three years.

This is a 3-year-contract – the precise starting date depends on organisational issues.

Responsibilities

You will work within an interdisciplinary ERC project which focuses on an archaeological research concession in northern Sudan (Munich University Attab to Ferka Survey Project, see <https://www.sudansurvey.gwi.uni-muenchen.de/>).
The project DiverseNile aims to reconstruct ancient life cycles and biographies of landscape and peoples in Bronze Age Middle Nile following a multidisciplinary approach, focusing on settlements, cemeteries, material culture, environmental remains and landscape.

You will be responsible for Work package 1: The variability of domestic architecture in the Attab to Ferka region.

The key for reconstructing the variability of domestic architecture (both dry-stone and mud brick architecture) in the periphery of Amara West and Sai is to map and excavate Egyptian-style and Kerma-style remains, focusing on their distribution, properties, and fine dating.

You will work under the guidance of the project leader Julia Budka, but you  will be responsible for conducting excavations at settlement sites in the Attab to Ferka region. You will work independently on these data, processing them with respect to chronology, context and functional use including analogies from other sites. The three years 100% position will enable you to excavate, document and process selected sites for the ERC project and to prepare these for publication.

Requirements

In order to qualify for application, candidates must have completed their doctorate in the field of Egyptology, Sudanese or Egyptian archaeology or a related archaeological field with outstanding results. They have to demonstrate their openness towards working in an interdisciplinary context as well as an interest in basic and theoretical questions. You
should be an archaeologist with past field experience excavating settlements, preferably in Northeast Africa. Knowledge of the application of GIS in analysis is desired but not mandatory.

The ERC project DiverseNile hosted by LMU Munich offers the opportunity for individual academic development in an inspiring research environment.
