This new Summer School, organized by University of St Andrews in collaboration with the Black Friary Archaeology Field School, offers undergraduate students from around the world the opportunity to learn about the history of monasticism in Scotland and Ireland, and to learn key archaeological field skills.
What you will gain from the course:
-Become familiar with the history of Scotland and Ireland and the role of religion through the Middle Ages.
-On site in Ireland, learn the basic skills of the archaeologist, including both excavation and the proper handling and documentation of finds.
-Understand the value of cultural and sacred heritage to local communities.
-Work effectively in a team under a variety of challenging work and weather conditions.

Credits:
30 SCQF credits
(equivalent to 7-8 US credits or 15 ECTS)
Course fee:
£6,600 (includes accommodation and field trips). Airfare is not included. Group arrangements may be made for travel from St Andrews to Blackfriary.
Pre-requisites:
You should have an interest in the study of medieval history and be prepared for sometimes challenging physical work at the excavation site.
The academic approach of the course is problem-based, with students working in groups to define and explore a central, student-generated research question.
Entry requirements:
To be eligible for the programme, you should meet the following criteria:
-Have completed at least two semesters in full-time higher education before arrival in St Andrews.
-Have a minimum average grade of 3.2 (on a USA 4.0 GPA scale) or equivalent
-Meet St Andrews English language proficiency requirements.
Accommodation:
While in St Andrews, you will be housed in our halls of residence, with breakfast, lunch and dinner (excl. weekends when you are only provided with breakfast).
While in Ireland, you will have homestay accommodation in Trim, with breakfast, lunch and dinner daily.
Location:
The University of St Andrews is beautifully situated on the East coast of Scotland. St Andrews is a medieval town, and the surrounding area is rich in monastic history and archaeology.
Blackfriary is located in the small town of Trim, County Meath, Ireland. Trim retains much of its medieval street pattern, with buildings of archaeological and historical importance including the surviving elements of the original medieval town wall, church buildings dating from the thirteenth century and Trim castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland.
