The Classics Program at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York welcomes PhD applications for the Fall 2023 semester. We offer rigorous training in Latin and Ancient Greek, with a focus on research, teaching, and ethics. The program emphasizes the study of Greek and Latin literature and intellectual history. Our Ph.D. students can choose to concentrate their studies in ancient history or classical philology.

The Graduate Center oversees complementary certificate programs in Africana Studies, American Studies, Critical Theory, Global Early Modern Studies, Interactive Technology and Pedagogy, Medieval Studies, Philosophy, and Women’s and Gender Studies.

In addition to tuition remission and fellowship opportunities, students receive extensive undergraduate teaching experience at one of our CUNY campuses.  NYU and Fordham University share courses and students with our program; we are also part of a graduate consortium allowing attendance at other area schools.  Located next to the Empire State Building in the heart of NYC, we enjoy close access to exciting research-rich hubs such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York Public Library, and American Numismatic Society.

We are proud of our public university status and thrive because of our diverse student body.
