The Department of Classics at the University of Virginia welcomes applications for its PhD Program for the class entering in the Fall of 2024. Admitted students will be fully funded for six years at the level of $30,000 per annum; there are additional funding opportunities for summers and for travel to conferences.

Located at the heart of the University on the historic Lawn, the Department is home to an internationally renowned faculty and a strong and varied group of graduate students and undergraduate majors. The research specialties of the faculty span classical antiquity and extend to the Middle Ages, with interests ranging from religion, poetics, and reception to historiography, rhetoric, and linguistics. There is moreover a large group of affiliated classical faculty in the Departments of History, Art, Religious Studies, English, Politics, and Philosophy, who together with our faculty make for a lively interdisciplinary classical community. We also collaborate with UVA’s Karsh Institute for Democracy. Stressing philological rigor and innovative approaches to antiquity, the Department of Classics hosts frequent colloquia, visiting lectures, and conferences, including the longest running annual Graduate Student Colloquium in the US. The deadline for sending completed applications is 15 January. The GRE test is not required.
