The MA Programmes in Egyptology at Leiden University (The Netherlands) and KU Leuven (Belgium) have a unique two month training program that is organised by the Netherlands-Flemish Institute in Cairo, Egypt. This Egyptian Archaeology Study Programme aims to broaden the study of Egyptology with educational components that are difficult to deal with outside of Egypt. Archaeological research in Egypt is therefore the main focus point. The programme consists of a combination of seminars, excursions, and research assignments, aimed at equipping you with the skills that are necessary to conduct your own research in Egypt. The seminars and the first preparations of the assignments take place at the NVIC. For further research, you will also make use of libraries at other institutes in Cairo (DAIK, IFAO, ARCE, etc.), which will be introduced during the first week. The excursions take you to ongoing fieldwork throughout Egypt, and to sites that are more difficult of access.
This programme is taught in English, and all information can be found on the University’s website. Although the exact schedule of the program varies each year, depending mainly on ongoing fieldwork at the time, the diary of last year’s programme (2014-2015) gives an idea of what this training entails. The next Egyptian Archaeology Study Program will take place from 10 January to 1 March 2016. While this programme is normally exclusive for students of Leiden and Leuven, there are a few more places available for the 2016 program, which the University exceptionally wants to make available for students from other institutions. In addition there are still some places available for external students from non affliated universities (the course will be in English), those interested to take part are invited to send their application and requested documents to Dr De Meyer. The deadline for application is Friday 9 October 2015. Review of the applications will take place shortly thereafter, and selected candidates will be invited for a skype interview.
The tuition fee for external students is EUR 1,000.- (for students affiliated with Leiden University’s Dutch and Flemish partner universities this tuition fee is waived.). To cover expenses of transportation and accomodation during excursions, an additional fee of EUR 725 is charged. The NVIC does not provide accomodation for the students, but helps students to find a place to stay in the vicinity of the institute.
